UN reports over 100 sexual assault cases in southern sudan

Following the unrest in southern Sudan, the UN has released very disturbing statistics that peg the nation as one of the worst crime states where sexual crimes and assaults has become the other of the day, following the out break of political violence three weeks ago in the five year old nation. According to the UN, at least 120 cases of sexual violence and rape against civilians in South Sudan's capital Juba has been recorded ever since fighting broke out three weeks ago between troops loyal to the country's rival leaders.

The turmoil which erupted earlier this month, took to its high point at the country's capital in Juba when troops loyal to president Salva engaged those backing ousted vice president Riek Marchar who was replaced with a former chief opposition negotiator following the broken ranks between the two leaders.

At least 272 people were killed before the leaders ordered a ceasefire.

South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, descended into civil war after President Salva Kiir fired Vice President Riek Machar as country's vice president in 2013 as the president accused Mr. Machar and ten others of attempting a coup d'état.. More than 10,000 people have been killed and some two million displaced, many of whom fled to neighboring countries.

South Sudan's civil right groups had constantly accused the country's military of engaging in crimes against humanity as well as war crimes going by their activities in recent times as recorded in several statistical findings and report.

Kiir reappointed Machar earlier this year under a peace deal agreed in August. But Machar left Juba following the outbreak of violence earlier this month and Kiir replaced him on Monday with General Taban Deng Gai, a former chief opposition negotiator who has broken ranks with Machar.
