Powerful earthquakes in Italy kills many

A devastating earthquake has struck a mountainous stretch of central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least over 70 persons with some many injured while others still remain trapped under debris and setting up tremors that awakened residents in Rome, nearly 100miles to the southeast.  

The first a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struct at 3:36am, about 6.5 miles southeast of the town of Norcia in the Umbria region, followed by about 40 quakes over the next three hours, including a 5.5 magnitude temblor at about 4:33am. According to the authorities, the density of the quake seems similar to that which happened in 2009 in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, killing a total of 300 persons.

The quake which took many Italians by surprise  cuts across three regions of the country namely; Umbria, Lazio and Marche, as this could also be felt far way the city of Bologna in the north and Naples in the south. The towns of Accumoli, Amatrice, Arquata del tronto, were reported to be among the most heavily damaged.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in a brief remarks from Rome, said he would head towards the epicenter of the quake later on Wednesday. He thanked rescue workers and volunteers who had dug through debris, some with their bare hands, to reach trapped people, while stressing that the nation had rallied to help. "No family, no city, no hamlets will be left alone", he added.

 "Half of the town no longer exist" said the mayor of Amatrice, Sergio Pirozzi who added that the rescue teams were digging through the rubble" hoping that most people are alive". The historic center of the town, with buildings dating to the middle ages has been destroyed

"The problem is removing people from under the rubble", he said. Asked how many people were still trapped or dead underneath the rubble, he said "many many".

Similarly, the Pontiff, who had to skip catechism in his general audience, led faithfuls outside the St. Peter Square, as they prayed for the victims of all those who lost their lives in the quake that has now claimed so much persons while destroying properties and rendering many more homeless.

'I cannot fail to express my heartfelt sorrow and spiritual closeness to all those present in the zones of the afflicted. I also express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones, and my spiritual support to those who are anxious and afraid. Hearing the mayor of Amatrice say the town no longer exist, and learning that they are children among the dead, i am deeply saddened "the pontiff ended according to his remarks released by the Vatican.
