Edo, southern Nigeria holds election today

Nigeria: The Edo state gubernatorial election in southern Nigeria commences today as electioneering process begins in all electoral polling units as early as 8:00am. The election which spans across over nineteen political parties sees just two prominent candidates as the major players in today's process. 

banner_2016-general-elections_160127_featured-09Though, there’s only one female governorship contestant, Tracy Agol, who happens to be a gubernatorial aspirants of Peoples’ Party of Nigeria together with several others , the election seems to a resonance between two major players from two different political party in a keenly contested battle between opposition candidate Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples democratic party PDP and that of the incumbent party's candidate Godwin Obaseki of the All Progress Congress APC. 

The State Government had declared a public holiday for Tuesday, September 27 and Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

The public holiday was declared to enable voters in the state travel to their various locations and exercise their franchise.

However, Banks and corporate community have now been exempted from the public holiday on Tuesday, September 27 in order not to slow down the economy of the state which is already on the rise.

Seven political parties have women as their deputy governorship candidates.

Election, votersEdo State has a total of 1,925,105 registered voters; 192 Registration Areas (RAs); 2,627 Polling Units (Pus); and 4,011 Voting Points (VPs).

A total of 25,000 police officers have been deployed across the state to ensure peace and security during the polls, while 44 observer groups were accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC as election monitors.

The election is billed to spread over all 18 local government areas of the state.

The election sees for the first time in Nigeria the in conclusion of persons with disabilities as they take part in the full electioneering process both as polls officials and electoral observers.
