Earthquake sparks Japan tsunami warning

A powerful magnitude-7.3 quake with an epicenter off Fukushima Prefecture occurred at around 5:59 a.m. Tuesday. A strong jolt was felt throughout the Tohoku and Kanto regions.

A lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was felt in parts of Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Tochigi prefectures.

Tsunami warning has been issued for Pacific coastal regions

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) in Fukushima, and a tsunami advisory for much of the rest of northeast Japan’s Pacific coast. The meteorological agency said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

Similarly, U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude at 6.9. The earthquake shook buildings in Tokyo, 240 kilometers (150 miles) southwest of the epicenter.

Coastal residents in Japan were ordered to flee to higher ground on Tuesday after a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck off the coast of Fukushima prefecture.

Japan Railways has suspended operations of dozens of bullet trains operating in eastern Japan.

The threat has now largely passed though sea level fluctuations may continue for several hours. ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?

Vehicles make a line as they flee following a tsunami warning in Iwaki, Fukushima prefectureThis earthquake has prompted flashbacks to March 2011, when a 9.1 magnitude quake hit just off the Eastern coast which unarguably has long been the most powerful quake in Japan's history, and one of the largest recorded in modern history with over 20,000 recorded deaths.

According to a report from the Telegraph The operator of the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has said there were no abnormalities observed at the plant, though a swelling of the tide of up to 1 metre was detected offshore.

Plant operator TEPCO said a pump that supplies cooling water to a spent fuel pool at the nearby Fukushima Dai-ni plant stopped temporarily, but that it was working again. The Tokyo-based utility is investigating the cause
