I am not moved by westrn pressure-Bashar al-Assad

The embattled president of Syria Bashar al-Assad has vehemently told Russian media that he will continue to hold on to power as long as the Syrian people are not complaining and will not succumb to the pressures from the west who are eager to see his down fall soon.

"As for the president, he comes to power with the people's assent through elections, and if he leaves, he leaves if the people demand it, not because of the judgment of the United States, the UN Security Council, the Geneva Conference or the Geneva Communique," he said.

"If the people want him to stay the president stays. In the opposite case, he should swiftly step down."
Assistance from Iran, which has supplied military technology to Syria, has been crucial in fighting against terrorism in Syria, he said.
