Nigeria minister sends players packing from Rio

Following the financial crisis rocking the camp of the U-23 Olympic football team, the Nigeria minister of sport has ordered the packing out of some players alongside officials of the team back home away from the on-going Rio Olympics. The minister who hinted that such moves became necessary owing to the fact that the federation are beginning to run out of resources in taking care of extra mouths, which according to him where not duly accredited for the Rio games in Brazil.

Some of the affected players included Stanley Dimgba and goalkeeper Yusuf Mohammad alongside the team media adviser Mr. Temi Ebikagboro, curator and the team coordinator.  The minister who hinted that ever since the team left Atlanta for Rio, her ministry has taken the responsibility of some of this players and officials who according to him had no business been there since there were not among the accredited 25 players who were vetted as participants at the Rio games.

"The organizer of the games, the international Olympic committee, are only responsible for 25 accredited players and officials including feeding, flights and accommodation. We have been carrying the rest along. In Manaus, we were forced to pay camp allowances to the extra  players making 29".

It will be recalled that the team was prevented from leaving their hotel over unpaid bills of eight of their unaccredited players and officials which spark an uproar between the team and the ministry before it was eventually settled. it is to this end, that the minister has cited her action in doing the needful so as to further avoid future embarrassment as the team progresses in the tournament.

The sent packing crew has since left Brazil to Nigeria.
