Former Israeli president dies
Breaking News: The family of former Israeli President Shimon Peres has confirmed his demise Wednesday morning.His son, Chemi, made the announcement as reporters gathered at the hospital where Peres has been treated for the past two weeks.
"Today with deep sorrow we bid farewell to our beloved father, the 9th president of Israel.
"Our father's legacy has always been to look to tomorrow. We were privileged to be part of his private family, but today we sense that the entire nation of Israel and the global community share this great loss. We share this pain together."
Former Israeli president and Noble peace prize winner Shimon perez dies at 93. President Peres who has been battling with stroke shortly after he collapsed two weeks ago has been in intensive care on until his death at the Wii hours of Wednesday.
The Israeli statesman died in hospital in Tel Aviv early on Wednesday.
He was a towering figure on the Israeli center-Left and served several short terms as prime minister before being elected to the largely-ceremonial role of president from 2007 until 2014.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was due to deliver a special address later, issued a statement of mourning: "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara express deep personal sorrow over the passing of the nation's beloved former president, Shimon Peres."
"There are few people who we share this world with who change the course of human history, not just through their role in human events, but because they expand our moral imagination and force us to expect more of ourselves. My friend Shimon was one of those people," Mr Obama said in a White House statement.
Born in Poland in 1923, Mr Peres moved with his family to Tel Aviv in the 1930s during the time of the British mandate in Palestine.
He joined the Labour Zionist movement and then the Haganah, the underground Jewish paramilitary force that would later become the Israeli Defence Forces.
He played a key part in reaching the Oslo peace accords, the first deal between Israel and the Palestinians, which said they would "strive to live in peaceful coexistence
