Turkey shoots down Russian warplane on Syria border:
This morning, Turkish shot down a Russian warplane and sparked a diplomatic row with Moscow and Vladimir Putin.
Here is a rundown of what has happened so far:
• At 7.24am GMT, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane that it said violated its airspace. Soon after the incident, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency shared video online that showed the moment the plane came crashing down and the two pilots ejected themselves.
• The Turkish army confirmed its action in a statement shortly after, claiming it had told the plane 10 times in five minutes not to violate its airspace: "The plane violated Turkish air space 10 times in five minutes despite warnings at 7.24am according to the rules of engagement."
• The Russian-made SU-24 was shot down by Turkish F-16 fighter jets, but Russia denied it violated Turkey's airspace. Initially, the Russian defence ministry said their plane was hit by ground fire rather than Turkish jets.
• Nato soon announced that after the incident, there would be an "extraordinary" meeting of the North Atlantic Council at 4pm GMT in Brussels and confirmed it was in contact with Ankara
• There have been conflicting reports from different local sources that the Telegraph is seeking to confirm that one or two of the pilots were killed. According to Turkmen rebels (see here for who Turkmen are), both pilots had been killed after they shot at them when they parachuted from the plane. But there are some reports saying that one pilot died upon landing.
• Sergei Lavrov, due to go to Turkey tomorrow, has reportedly cancelled his visit while journalists reported that the Russian charge d'affaires in Turkey was summoned to Ankara's foreign ministry.
• Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin offered harsh words to Turkey, accusing it of stabbing Russia in the back and warning of serious consequences between the two countries. The Russian president insisted that the plane was downed over Syrian territory as he accused Turkey of being terrorist accomplices.
