Minister for transport proposed a new shipping line for Nigeria

The Minister for transportation Mr. Rotimi chibuike Ameachi has announced the federal government plans in floating a new national shipping ocean carrier as he reveals the modalities towards achieving such feat.

The transport minister who made this known at the Maritime technical summit held in lagos organised by the Association of marine engineers and suveyors (AMES) hinted that this proposed new national ocean carrier of vessels will not be financed through the cabotage vessel financing funds (CVFF)stating that it finances will come from some other reliable source.

The transport minister who explained that the current national shipping vessel carrier 'NNSL' ran aground stated the need for this proposed new shipping line while noting that it's also part of the FG resolve to develop the shipping sector in Nigeria.

Mr. Rotimi Ameachi also spoke. On the dire need to strengthen the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in a bid to producing skilled man labour in the maritime sector. According to the minister, the institution would have been more strengthen than what it's present state looks like if the funds used in establishing the federal maritime university Okenrenkoko (South South Nigeria) was used in the development and onward upliftment of the Academy.

In his words " Anybody who has invested in the maritime university okenrenkoko should have invested the money in MAN oron. That is why the institution has not develop. We cannot continue to build other
institutions while the existing one has not been equipped".

Similarly, the president of AMES Mr Charles Uwdia also reveals that the maritime sector needs an holistic review for an enhance human capacity development while adding that the sharp decline in standard, quality and profitability of the ships of the nation's flag is as a result of their poor technical strenght which is further aggravated by the owners reluctance in compliance with both national and international best practices.

Seemingly, the minister also stressed that he will be meeting with several experts in the maritime fields for onward discussion of this new proposed idea as he believes that the FG is on course to raise the investment band of the country.
